Hot fun in the summertime. or, pass the Maxalt please.

Date June 30, 2008

I love summer. I really do! Fierce blue skies and puffy white clouds.  Beaches, sunshine, cookouts.  And them summer days are officially here, complete with the 3 H’s: heat, humidity, and headaches.

My head, doesn’t so much enjoy summertime.  Humidity is a trigger for my migraines - and with the wave of storms that hit us last week, I ended up with a doozy of a migraine that lasted 3 days.  After one day in bed with curtains drawn, and two more days of drugs (totaling 5 Maxalt), the headache took a vacation.

Over the weekend, another rash of storms and heat waves hit us. I didn’t dare journey outdoors; instead sat my arse in the house in the comfort of my central air conditioning.  I’m a sadist, but damn - just the thought of another 3 days on meds was enough to dissuade me from personal torture.

Well, here’s to summer. Here’s to fun. And here’s to hoping the rest of it goes better than the past 2 weeks!

I need more time! But don’t we all?

Date June 29, 2008

Why is it, as a child, time goes by so slowly - like an inchworm crawls; but, as an adult, it goes by much too quickly?  Children can’t wait to grow up.  Parents reflect back on their childhood wishing they had that time again.  Mainly just for the sake of ample time to do nothing.

There isn’t enough time in my week to do all of the things I’d like to get done.  On top of that, my motivation factor SUCKS!  I have a running list that I keep in my moleskine.  Granted, it’s a never-ending list - that’s the whole concept; however, some of the items are long-overdue. And they’re not even difficult. But require a little effort and (the key factor) MOTIVATION.

My intentions are good. Truly they are.  But if I don’t get started the moment my feet hit the floor, they pretty much aren’t going to hit the floor.  Instead, they’ll be firmly planted on the footrest while my butt clings to the couch.

Can someone kindly kick me in the ass to get me moving?  Just one swift kick should be sufficient.  If not, how about extending the weekends another 2 days?

:sheep:

The upcoming year is going to go by much faster than I want it to and, before I know it, I’m going to be sitting at Nick’s graduation.  For that reason, I plan to make the best of - and savor - the time available up until then.

Back from sabbatical - miss me?

Date June 20, 2008

Back from a self-imposed sabbatical. Have you missed me?

Some of my “kids” graduated from high school last night. With proud, happy tears in my eyes, I told them while one journey has ended, a wonderfully exciting new journey is about to begin.

And next week, Nick has a sitting for his senior pictures. The school year JUST ended yesterday - they’re not wasting any time. I just take a deep breath and exhale, and reflect back over the past 12 years. With it comes the stark realization that my little boy has evolved into a responsible, young adult whose future is bright, and journey ahead a winding road.

To all of those graduates out there - congratulations. Enjoy what lies ahead around the next corner.

A teddy bear, m&m’s, and a potty.

Date June 7, 2008

Being the mother of a young adult, I thought I’d do something a little different here, and pass along to mothers of young children “learnings from personal experiences” that have been helpful. For this first installment, I’m going to focus on that all too dreaded topic of potty training.

potty Everyone told me it’s harder to potty train boys than girls. Being the mother of a boy and not a girl, I’m not qualified to validate that fact. But I can tell you not long after Nick turned two, he was potty trained. How you ask?

  • a teddy bear,
  • a toddler’s potty (not a seat that fits on an adult toilet),
  • m&m’s, and
  • this book: Once Upon a Potty (Boy).

So what did we do?

First and most important: Fundamentally, your child will let you know when they’re ready, and you really shouldn’t force the issue. But you can help encourage them. This is what worked for us.

pottyboy Starting at around 18-months, we would frequently read Once Upon a Potty to Nick. The book is written for children 1 year and up, and tells the story of a toddler, Joshua, as he learns how to use the potty. (This one is for boys while there’s another one in the series for girls.)

Fully illustrated and simply written, the author, Alona Frankel, wrote it for her son back in the 1970s as he, himself, was in the process of learning. And, it’s still widely recommended today. (You can count me in as a big supporter!)

Also at around 18 months, we bought Nick his OWN potty designed specifically for toddlers, and put a jar of m&m’s in the bathroom (out of his reach, of course). Nick was rewarded with a couple of m&m’s each time he willingly sat on his potty. (Yes, we chose m&m’s. You can substitute any other special treat your child rarely gets but REALLY wants - however, reserve it ONLY for potty training.)

pottyBeing fully portable, we’d bring the potty out of the bathroom and put it in his bedroom, or kitchen, or living room. This helped dispell any fears of a “strange object in the bathroom,” and being forced to go into that weird room. As well, having it in plain sight helped foster his curiosity and acceptance of that strange chair.

Over the course of the next few months, Nick memorized the book, AND then taught his teddy bear how to use the potty. Mind you, Nick would sit on his potty, but not use it. Basically, it was just a place to sit. Then one day it finally clicked, and he actually did pee in his potty. Not just sit on it.

prdby It was a proud moment, and a major milestone. Not only an accomplishment, but an esteem-builder, too, in that he did it when he was ready; not when I felt he was ready.

After that day, he used his potty all the time.

Here’s a good adage to go along with this - you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink.  When he’s thirsty enough, he will.
