Yesterday (Monday).
Ms A: Hi, Ms. M, this is Nick’s gym teacher.
Moi: Hi. What’s up?
Ms A: Just wanted to give you a heads up Nick now has 3 “unprepareds” in gym. (loosely translated - he doesn’t have gym clothes)
Moi: 3? Didn’t the new cycle just start last week?
Ms A: Uh, yeah. About that. Last week, he had one unprepared on Tuesday. And then that cut on Friday.
Ms A: And then again today. That’s 3.
Moi: Oh, I see. I know he had just done all of his laundry. I guess he forgot to bring his gym clothes back to school. I’ll see to it that it doesn’t happen again.
Ms A: Thank you.
Moi: Thanks. Good-bye.
Ms A: Uh, bye.
(About that cut. Nick told me he was at the guidance office discussing his choices for next year. He later admitted he had cut class to go home, distraught, to dig a hole to bury Marley, who had died that morning. The hole he dug was smack dab in the middle of the yard. Two hours of work for nothing as I made him fill it back in and dig a hole in the BACK of the house instead.)
Moi (texting Nick): You gym teacher just called me.
Nick (texting back): I know because I left my clothes at the house. Dont worry not going to forget them and miss more.
Moi: I explained that to the teacher. Can’t stress the importance of being prepared.
Nick: I know. wont happen again.
Nick: Had dention due to that cut. Im out now. D’s pickin me up and were going to her house.
Moi: did they talk to you about the repercussions of cutting?
Nick: Nah.
Moi: So basically you just harbor resentment that you had to sit thru dention and do it again huh.
Nick: Basically.
Fast forward to this morning.
Just dropped Nick off at school. Five minutes later as I’m making my way to the office I get the following text:
Nick : I need my house keys. go and get them and bring them here for me please. There by the kitchen table.
So much for that lesson on being prepared!
Guess I’d better let go of those expectations of him having a passing grade in gym.
