Over the weekend, I went to upstate New York to visit and watch my nephew, Tyler, play football. He’s a senior and co-captain of the IRHS team, and lives and breathes football. His team had another great year - undefeated during the regular season, and now in playoffs.
I fed updates of the game to my sister, who was out of town, via text messages. Looking back at them, you can see why the team is undefeated:
4:29pm: Opening kickoff of the game - IR ran back [87 yards] for a TD .. Jared? somebody? The crowd is fired up!
4:32pm: BTW, sitting here in a sea of blue - thanks for giving me a red jacket to wear which coincidentally is the color of the opposing team. Getting some glares from those around me. Having to reassure them I’m for IR.
4:37pm: Curtis just ran in a TD. Tyler got the conversion. Score is 16-0.
4:48pm: another TD for Curtis.
5:00pm: Another one 4 Curtis.
5:16pm: One for Jared. Score is 37-0.
5:23pm: One for Justin. 44-0.
5:34: It’s halftime.
… In less than 60 minutes, the team scored five touchdowns! FIVE! Impressive, isn’t it.
5:46: 2nd half starting.
… After halftime, they brought in the 2nd stringers to play and the teams passed possession back and forth between them.
At one point, the opposing team threw a pass in the cold rain that got caught in a wind gust and almost carried into the endzone for a touchback, but stopped short at the 8-yard line. (Hope someone got that on video - it would’ve been one of the highlights to enjoy over and over again. Well, maybe not for the other team, but it was funny.) Our team recovered the fumble and ultimately scored the final TD of the game, bringing the score to 52-0.
Despite many opportunities, the opponent never scored; same as the other teams that have come before them so far this year. Like poor little lambs going to slaughter.
The victory was another notch in the belt sealing IR’s presence in the next round of playoffs. And, it was their 39th consecutive victory.
Make it to the dome, and I’ll be there to cheer IRHS on to victory.
Good luck guys!
Update 11/10/2007: The team’s championship dreams were dashed last night as they lost by one point in the Eastern Regional playoffs. It was still a great season, guys! Kudos to all of you. ![]()
