One of my friends is at home gearing up to mow her backyard with their super-deluxe Toro - the “Cadillac” of lawnmowers. It’s hot, she’s sweaty, but still - the grass must be cut. So, she bites the bullet, grabs a water bottle, and resolves herself to the tedious chore of mowing the lawn.
As she’s cutting the grass, out of nowhere she hears a loud crunch and a grinding noise coming from under the mower. Then the mower dies. A sinking feeling comes over her.
She looks to see what the culprit object is that has now apparently destroyed her Cadillac. It turns out to be a metal rod, which her daughter left laying out in the middle of the yard. She yells up at her daughter - “come down here and get this!”
Bending down and tossing the rod aside, she checks the lawnmower for damage. Incredibly, there is nothing major. Actually it showed no visible signs of damage. Wow! The Cadillac definitely lived up to its reputation - virtually indestructible!
She turns her attention back to the task of cutting the grass, and goes to start the lawnmower. She pulls the start cord. Nothing. Only a whimper. She pulls the start cord again. Still nothing. A whine. She tries one more time - to no avail. She can hear it trying to start, but nothing!! The Cadillac is dead. “Oh no!” That sinking feeling is back again.
Fearing the worst, she realizes she must tell her husband the bad news. When he arrives home, she says to him “Honey, I’ve done a very bad thing. I killed the lawnmower.” He looks at her quizzically. She explains what happened.
After hearing about the “accident,” he goes over to the beloved Cadillac, and looks at it - turning it over, turning it this way, turning it that way. Well, it appears to be okay on the surface. He tries to start the mower, and pulls the start cord. Nothing. He gets the same whine she did earlier. He tries again. Still nothing.
He stops for a moment to think. Then, he squats down, removes the gas cap and looks inside. It’s empty. He fills it up, pulls the start cord, and Shazaam! It starts! All is well again. Feeling just a little less intelligent than she did earlier that day, she finishes mowing the lawn.
